Arnell Office Building, Brooklyn, NY

This office building for a construction company, wedged between the BQE and the Manhattan Bridge, was converted from its former use as a tool factory built in 1910. Utilizing the former utility basement, the offices are arranged in an L-shape around a two-story atrium that provides the space with light and spaciousness. The building lobby also expresses this two-story space. The visual effect is enhanced (and fitting for a construction company) by the original wood columns with their heavy bolts ad connector plates which were left exposed as were the joists and beams over the atrium. The upper floors are rental office space.
